While these characters are not explicitly labeled, their identity is revealed by consulting Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, where in the sixth book he writes, “of Sir Launcelot du Lake that lieth under the apple tree sleeping” (Chapter 3) after he had, “bad his nephew Sir Lionel for to make him ready, for two will seek adventures” (Chapter 1). Off to the right is Lancelot’s nephew, Sir Lionel, who is also asleep. In the centre of the fresco, sleeping on a rock, is Lancelot with Morgan le Fay standing above him. In this particular fresco, located in the middle of the bottom row of scenes on the southern wall, is a depiction of the interaction between Lancelot and Morgan le Fay that not only subverts the common gender iconography of the time, but also subverts the very gender roles expected of the characters themselves. The second floor, known as the Great Hall, is decorated with frescoes depicting different scenes from the adventures of King Arthur’s favourite knight, Sir Lancelot of the Lake. While its structural soundness is in itself impressive, it is what is depicted on the walls of the tower’s second floor that is truly awe-inspiring. A tower dated to the early 14 th century, used as a granary from the early 17 th to the late 18 th century, continues to this day to stand tall and relatively unchanged since its construction almost 700 years ago. In the small, idyllic, and relatively unknown Polish village of Siedlęcin, located in the southwestern section of the country near the Czechia border, there lies a hidden Arthurian treasure that had previously been lost for centuries to both the artistic and historic community.
